What is the Explorer Centre?

The South Pole Centre is a visitor attraction concept that celebrates the spirit of adventure that has prevailed in these Celtic lands since the dawn of time. It shines an informative, entertaining and educational light on the local legends that helped shape history.

Where will it be located?

Ideally the Centre will be located on the coast of Cork or Kerry. This is based on the historic legacy of explorers from these areas.

What its mission?

The South Pole Explorer Centre will inspire a local and global appreciation of the historic, scientific and cultural legacies of the irish that conquered the unknown and encourage and prevail their legacy for future generations.

When will it open?

Great question. Ideally in 3-5 years.

How much will it cost to build?

Based upon current plans and objectives, the approximate cost would be in the region of 12 to 20 million euros.

Who is going to fund the project?

Ideally a mix of private and public funding.

Who will own the Explorer Centre?

The financial structure will be a ‘not for profit’. The organization will be owned by members, private and public institutions.

How big is the centre?

Although still in the development phase, the complete Centre will be approximately 60,000 to 110,000 sq ft.

What is the Climate Research Centre?

The early explorations of Antartica carried out substantial scientific research. The Climate Research Centre, in conjunction with a leading Irish University will continue to pursue research on the factors that effect climate change.

Is it a museum?

It’s part museum, part science centre, 100% fun. The visitor experience includes immersive displays, hands on area’s and exhibits including the must see replica of the James Caird and much more!

How much will tickets be?

Our mission is to inspire as many people of all ages as possible to visit. We’re still working on ticket prices, but intend to insure affordability admission.

Will it have somewhere to eat?

Oh yes! The Hut is our exclusive culinary delight. With an interior inspired by Shackleton’s hut, you will find affordable food and grog options.

Will it be kid friendly?

Having fun, and learning is part of our key mission. We will welcome children of all ages and innovative Seal Club Playground, featuring Leo the Leopard seal can be accessed without a general admission ticket all year round.

Will the building be wheelchair friendly?

Absolutely – we’ll go above and beyond EU accessibility standards.

Will there be ample parking?

Easy access and parking for cars, RV’s, bikes and coaches is a key architectural objective.

What will the hours be?

Currently we planning for 6 days a week, closing on Mondays to refresh and restock. Hours would be from 10am to 7pm. The Hut restaurant will close at 8pm.
